Rugby in NZ – Get amongst it!!

Inside Running Recruitment catches up with Joe Bridger who chats about his NZ Rugby experience.

WHAT WAS PLAYING FOR FOXTON LIKE?
I had a great season with Foxton, it was a really good team to be a part of and the boys were a great bunch. The team culture was outstanding and that really helped us on the pitch. I joined 3 games in, and after that we played 11, winning 8 and only losing 3, all games to teams who finished in the top 4, which we just missed out on. On a personal note, I scored 7 tries in my 11 appearances and really think playing in NZ has aided me to develop as a player and progress me. Subsequently I have signed for Old Albanians in National 1 in England, which is a step up from National 2 North where I was playing, and I can't wait to get started.

HOW DID YOU SETTLE IN?
The club were brilliant in helping me settle in. They set me up with accommodation and a job so I was sorted from day one and looked after me well with good feeds and good socials! Would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a class experience.

WHAT IT LIKE LIVING IN A SMALL NZ TOWN?
Fortunately I grew up in a small town so living in Foxton wasn't really an issue for me, it meant for a really good social and good gym sessions though as all of the boys were close by and I got to know everyone really quickly. As for the Kiwi lifestyle, not much is different from the UK, just that they talk with a funny accent!

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE SOCIALLY?
The off field stuff was really enjoyable. The boys over there enjoy a beer so there were quite a few socials, especially on our away bus trips! It's quite a scenic area too so there are a good few places to go walking and exploring up on the Tararua Mountain range. I also got tickets to go watch Hurricanes v The Lions, which was an awesome experience to be a part of and such a good atmosphere in the ground! Finished with a good score of 31-31 too so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

DID YOU HAVE A LOOK AROUND NZ?
I didn't do a huge amount of travelling because I was out there for the rugby, but got to see Wellington a few times due to it being only an hour away. Once the season was done though I got up to see Auckland and Hobbiton, the latter was really cool and would definitely recommend it to anyone. My Uncle lives us in Keri Keri in Northland too and that was good to see him before I came home.
