Rugby Player Recruitment The undisputed jewel in the crown of Australian domestic rugby is without doubt The Shute Shield. This fiercely contested twelve club elite competition has captured both the hearts and minds of a discerning and passionate Sydney rugby public.

The competition was named after Australian Infantryman and Sydney University front row forward Robert Elliot Stewart Shute who tragically passed away from injuries accrued in a tour match played on the Manly Oval. The Sydney club University presented the Shute shield to the NSWRU in 1923 and it has been keenly contested by the cities top clubs ever since.

Playing numbers are phenomenal Shute clubs fielding four Senior Grade and three Colts (U20) sides every Saturday. There is a strong sense of camaraderie and character within each club, making the competition quite unique.

In addition, each club (Manly Marlins, Gordon Highlanders, Parramatta Two Blues, Southern Districts Rebels, Penrith Emus, Eastwood Woodies, The Beasties of Eastern Suburbs, West Harbour Pirates, Northern Suburbs Shoremen, Randwick’s Galloping Greens, Warringah Rats and the “Students” of Sydney University) has their own devoted sect of hugely passionate fans.

The Shute Shield “match of the round” is televised live by the Seven Network, a whopping 69 000 viewers tuned in to watch the 2017 Grand Final. Incredibly attendance at this year’s final (16 000) superseded the Wallaby vs Fiji test gate at AAMI Park in Melbourne.

Participating players revel in the prestige of the Shute Shield, relishing the opportunity to showcase their skills against quality opponents every Saturday upon packed Sydney club grounds. Inside Running, a highly reputable Rugby Player Recruitment Agency have excellent working relationships with some of the top Shute Shield clubs.

The standard of competition continues to improve each season, the bar constantly raises. Shute clubs are generally interested in recruiting New Zealand players of Mitre 10 Cup (or Mitre 10 Cup Development) calibre while UK players must be of Championship or upper National One standard.

The quality of coaching at Shute Level is nothing short of exceptional Former Wallaby enforcer Owen Finegan is guiding Randwick this year while the highly experienced duo of Brian “Billy” Melrose (Australian U20, London Irish, Waratahs and St George-Illawarra) and Todd Louden (Blue Bulls, Melbourne Rebels and Waratahs) will be overseeing the Manly Marlins and West Harbour Pirates campaigns respectively.

There is a huge emphasis on skill work, strength and conditioning in the Shute. Clubs have some seriously well-equipped training facilities and are employing highly experienced trainers all intent on gaining the edge over their rivals. The Shute style is without question attack orientated. Played on hard and fast decks, each side contains skilful forwards and backlines full of pace, guile and footwork capable of unlocking the staunchest opposition defensive screen.

Based on both ability and potential there are some excellent packages available for aspiring players including match fees, win bonuses and sometimes retainers. Flights, accommodation assistance, gym access and a raft of quality employment options are also readily available. Some clubs will even provide financial assistance towards tertiary fees, trade qualifications, courses and tickets to further players employment options and career prospects.
