A common question Inside Running is asked by rugby players, caregivers and in some cases unions or clubs is ‘why does a rugby player need an outside party to represent them’? Below are some key points as to why Inside Running believes players need representation:

To negotiate & manage a player’s professional rugby contracts. The contracting environment under the new Collective Agreement governing rugby players in NZ has become far more complex. Player’s need an expert to provide advice and assistance regarding your professional rugby contracts in NZ if you are to fully understand the implications of signing a contract.

As well as understanding the contracting environment in NZ it is crucial a player’s contractual terms are the best they possibly can be. A player needs a representative that can negotiate them a fair deal. Negotiating skills are very important as is market knowledge and relationships with key employers. In New Zealand’s case these are the 14 Provincial unions, five Super 14 franchises and the NZRU.

To seek out and provide neutral advice on professional rugby playing opportunities with various employers both in New Zealand and abroad.

To provide the player with knowledge and guidance to ensure they are aware of where they are heading with their rugby career and have a ‘game plan’ with contingency plans built into it.

To manage and mentor players through their professional career’s and assist to build a plan for life after professional sport. All professional rugby players regardless of their level should be well positioned for a career outside of rugby once their playing days are over.

To ensure promotional opportunities such as personal sponsorship and endorsements are maximised.

To provide ongoing support and where appropriate to use networks to ensure both rugby and non rugby related issues are managed effectively; i.e media training and arranging financial, investment and taxation advice etc.
